Beer

Beer is a low-alcohol aromatic foamy drink with hop bitterness, made by alcoholic fermentation of wort from barley malt, hops and water. For certain beers, barley malt is partially replaced by rice, corn or barley flour and sugar.

Depending on the type, beer contains 4-10% of easily digestible nutrients, mainly carbohydrates, a small amount of amino acids, other protein breakdown products and minerals. In addition, the beer contains 1.8-6% alcohol, 0.3-0.4% carbon dioxide, bitter and tannins of hops, organic acids.

The history of beer is probably as old as agronomic science. As soon as man learned to harvest grain from plants, he began to use grain products for food; bread and beer were among the first foods of the farmer.

Historical records show that in Mesopotamia 6,000 years ago beer was made from bread specially baked for this purpose; the bread was brewed with barley malt, and this mixture was fermented. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans also prepared and consumed beer.

Beer myths

Distinguish between light and dark beer. Light beer has a fine, well-pronounced hop bitterness and aroma, dark beer has moderate hop bitterness and has a malt flavor. Light malt is used for the preparation of light beers, and specially made dark or caramel malt is used for dark beer.

There are no degrees in non-alcoholic beer. It all depends on what to compare with, if with ordinary beer or any other alcoholic beverage, then we can say that there are no degrees of intoxication and you can get behind the wheel. But special guardians of sobriety will have to refuse from non-alcoholic beer, since the content of ethyl alcohol in the foamy drink, which has lost the status of "alcoholic" at the behest of the manufacturer, can reach 0.5%. True, in this case, you will have to limit yourself in the use of kefir with its alcohol content of 1.5%, and kvass with its alcohol content of 1.2%.

A non-sexual belly appears from beer. This popular belief is not true. By itself, beer is by no means a high-calorie product. The energy value of the foamy drink ranges from 24 kcal in non-alcoholic varieties to 50 kcal in dark varieties. For comparison, fruit juices contain the same amount of calories. However, fans of cubes in the press should take into account that beer is an excellent aperitif, which means the appetite and, accordingly, the amount of high-calorie snacks traditionally consumed with beer only increases.

Beer is a healthy vitamin drink. It is absolutely true that it is a vitamin, but the benefits of these vitamins are very doubtful. Basically, beer is rich in B vitamins, but in order to provide the body's daily need, for example, vitamin B1, it is necessary to consume up to 10 liters of a foamy drink.

Breasts enlarge from beer. Young ladies who dream of a magnificent bust should not be reassured - beer does not so fruitfully affect the female body. In men who abuse beer, testosterone production decreases and, as a result, the figure is rebuilt according to the female type - the hips and chest increase.

Warm beer is a waste of money. Indeed, when the temperature of the foamy drink rises, its most valuable - the refreshing effect - is lost. Experts recommend chilling beer to temperatures ranging from 6 to 12 degrees Celsius. If you overdo it, the drink can change its taste and turn a cloudy color. Plastic dishes will not spoil the beer. A myth for true connoisseurs who insist only on natural materials, claiming that beer poured into an organic synthesis product does not change the taste for the better.

Beer should be drunk in small sips with long pauses. Not entirely true. Real aesthetes really recommend not to rush, but the most important thing is to follow a certain sequence of drinking. To begin with, it is worth draining half of the container with beer, then half of what is left, and only then drink to the bottom.

A lot of foam - unprofessional pouring. The myth of pure water. Among real beer connoisseurs, there is a rule of "two fours". The height of the foam in the glass with the intoxicated drink must be at least 4 centimeters and must remain in its original form for at least four minutes.

Beer must be poured into the glass along the wall. A delusion that flows smoothly from the myth that a good bartender has no foam in a mug with an intoxicated drink. In fact, the beer should be poured into the center of the glass from a height of about 2-2.5 centimeters above its edge. The amount of beer when properly bottled should be three quarters of the height of the glass or mug. Often, manufacturers of special containers for beer make a mark to which the height of the poured drink should reach.

Before the first sip, blow off the foam from the beer. This is partly true, in any case, it is definitely necessary to try. This is a reliable test of the quality of the beer. If the foam flew off in no time, then the brewer's conscience failed. It is known that if you blow on a good beer, then the foam will simply bend, forming a wave over the glass.

Beer causes impotence. The myth of pure water, however, has been proven that beer significantly reduces libido in both men and women.

Beer is not addictive, unlike spirits. It is not true. Moreover, it has been proven that beer alcoholism develops much faster than dependence on strong alcoholic beverages. This is due to the fact that when drinking low-alcohol beer, in addition to the intoxicating effect on a person, a sedative, that is, a calming effect, has a great influence. This is what contributes to more addiction. Compounding beer alcoholism is the persistent belief that barley drink is almost not alcohol. To achieve the desired relaxation with daily consumption, the dose of beer is increased. In addition, narcologists argue that beer alcoholism is more difficult to treat.

Beer is a man's drink. Quite a common misconception considering the role of women in brewing history. Even in ancient Babylon, women brewers were priestesses in temples. And it is no coincidence that the goddess Ninkashi, the Sumerian patroness of brewers, was chosen as the emblem of the beer festival in London. Every year the number of fans of the foamy drink only increases. In the Czech Republic, for example, more than half of the female population - 60%, admit that they drink beer. In Russia, according to data for 2008, 41% of the fair half of humanity drink beer. Some brewers, targeting women, specifically produce beers with fruit flavors.

Oktoberfest starts in October. Despite the fact that the German name of the holiday, which drives all beer lovers crazy, literally translates as "October folk festivities", the Oktoberfest itself begins in September since 1872.

The ad featuring a brewer embarrassed by a bench and a goat is an invention of modern advertisers. In fact, this way of checking the quality of beer really existed in the Middle Ages. Beer was considered good quality only if a wooden bench with a freshly brewed foamy drink spilled on it was tightly stuck to the inspector's leather pants.

If the beer is too light, then it is diluted with water. Quite a common misconception among pub visitors. Professionals evaluate lager beer by its color. It is believed that light beers should not shine and should be strictly golden without reddish or brown tints. Thus, the main quality indicator for light beers is that the lighter the better, as brewers often mask bad beer by darkening it.

Beers of different strengths make excellent cocktails. It is not recommended to mix the foamy drink, independently adjusting the color and strength. Beers of different degrees of even one manufacturer should be drunk separately, so as not to spoil its taste.
